Selecting a Major

Applying for a specific major or as undeclared

If you are not sure what you want to do when you ‘grow up’ that is completely okay! The vast majority of colleges allow students to apply as undeclared, meaning they are not sure what they want to focus on in college yet. Even if you select a major and then end up changing your mind in college that is okay and even expected.

On the other hand, if you have a passion for a subject or a particular future career you’re aiming for, it is best to apply to a major that will support that passion. This way you can paint a picture of your admissions reader that ties your academic record, extracurriculars, and future pursuits together.

One thing to note: some universities place limits on which major you can select after being admitted as an undeclared student. These vary from school to school but oftentimes restricted majors include business or engineering. In these cases if you would like to study in the restricted major at xyz school you would need to apply and be accepted into that major as a freshman.
